Many species of birds, wildlife and plant life depend on these areas. The mangroves growing along the estuary are especially significant environmentally, since they serve as filters for polluted water flowing from the rivers out into the ocean. The Tamarindo Wildlife Refuge protects a large estuary of mangrove forest and tropical dry forest covering an area of almost 1,000 acres. The boat trip into the estuary offers an opportunity to observe rare and abundant wildlife, including dozens of tropical bird species and three species of monkeys, caiman and crocodiles while learning about the unique ecosystem of the mangrove forest.
