These include: Lake Windermere; where you can take a steamer and travel the lake. Dove Cottage; the home of William Wordsworth. Hill Top; the home of famous childrens writer Beatrix Potter. other attractions include Aquarium (Lakeside), Wildlife park (Penrith), Theatre's (Windermere, Kendal & Keswick).
Originally built in the 1600's in the style of a typical lakeland farmhouse, Foxghyll has undergone a diverse and colourfull history. Having once had the famous writer and poet Thomas DeQuincey as a tenant for a short time, the house was later occupied by the Hon. W.E. Forster, MP for the Borough of Bradford, and the first minister of education. It was during this time in the 1870's that extensive additions were made in the decorative & imaginative style of an affluent Regency country house.
For the last 2 decades however, Foxghyll has become one of the leading family rum B & B's in the area, offering guests a peaceful & tranquil setting, yet all within easy walking distance of Ambleside Town Centre. Set amongst a formerly laid, 2 acre garden and with direct access to Loughrigg Fell itself. Foxghyll sits as a haven to all those who seek to enjoy the beauty & serenity that the Lake District has to offer. During the Spring & Summer months, Foxghyll's private & secluded garden comes to life with a vast and varied array of plant & shrub life, with excellent views of the Lakeland Fells. From land adjoining the river Rothay, Foxghyll can also boast private fishing. Foxghyll also provides ample private parking.
As a grade 2 listed building. Foxghyll has remained virtually unaltered inside since it's 1870 renovation. All guests rooms are to be found in their original size and design, with the original dressing rooms providing convenient en-suite bathrooms. The interior is decorated in a style befitting the house, as antiques, panelled doors and ornate plasterwork ceilings adorn the interior.
To set you up for the day, a substantial & traditional full English breakfast is served in the polished oak floored dining room. A Vegetarian breakfast is available on request.
Guests can also relax in the bright South facing private guests lounge, which offers direct access onto the garden.
On a night time Ambleside Town centre offers many different places to eat. From top 'haute cuisine' to bistro's, pizza restaurants, Italian, Tapas, Chinese, Indian and local public houses which serve delicious bar food.
Foxghyll does only 3 letting guest rooms, which means we can offer service on a more personal level, to ensure guest comfort. All bedrooms offer comprehensive en-suite bathroom facilities, as well as essentials like tea / coffee making facilities, remote colour T.V, clock radio, hairdryer etc. All rooms provide adequate comfortable seating, with either setee or armchair. Heading North, take the A591 from Ambleside heading toward Grasmere. About 1 mile after leaving Ambleside you will see the village nameplate RYDAL. SLOW DOWN, about 300 yards after the sign is a humped back bridge to your LEFT which takes you over the river.
