Manaslu Circuit Tsum Valley Trekking (#3/26) The old, uncut forest between Bimthang and Kharche was such a site to see. It reminded me of the Hoh rain forest in Olympic National Park, Washington State, USA. This Nepal forest had its share of huge firs and hardwoods, draped in moss, with a rich and diverse under story of incredibly green plants. The maples were bright yellow and gold.
90% + of the trekkers on this trek, both Manaslu and Tsum valley, were camping. The camping groups were quite large – 12, 14, 16 – way to big in my opinion. These groups were from western Europe, mainly French, Belgium, and German with some from the UK. In a few cases, they would overwhelm a teahouse (the camping staff choosing for their clients to eat in the tea house dining area rather than setup their dining tent.). In these instances, we were usually forced into the teahouse kitchen, which was fine with me. Fortunately, these large groups moved slow so it was easy to get away from them! I was surprised at the number of large camping groups doing Tsum Valley or Manaslu; however, we didn’t run into anybody that was doing both. In spite of the large camping groups, it was still easy to find solitude and get away from these groups, especially during the day. The bottlenecks usually happened in the evenings where they camped just outside the lodges. Fortunately, in the Tsum valley, the homestays weren’t big enough to accommodate the campers so they had their own camping sites.
There’s a hotel building boom happening on the Manaslu Circuit. Many of the lodges that we stayed at were brand new. Next spring, most of the villages will have twice as many tea houses, and by next fall, they will have even more. If the lodging situation at Dharamsala is resolved and more lodging capacity is built in the nearby area, this trek will easily replace the Annapurna Circuit.

New Open Trekking in Manaslu Tsum Valley (#9/26) The old, uncut forest between Bimthang and Kharche was such a site to see.
