This vast inner delta was formed by the receding of the great Pre-Andean depression.Lacking the necessary inclination to drain away heavy rainfall, the Paraguay River and its tributaries overflow banks, depositing sediments, thus enriching the soil and conveying seeds and nutrients to natural pastures.Heavy rainfall, characteristic of the peculiar rainfaill cycle of the Pantanal, averages annual precipitation varying from 1,300 to 1,450mm.The landplains are periodically flooded, and this changeable drainage pattern alters the local topography, resulting in a diversified scenery of small and broad rivers, feeder streams, lakes, ponds, lagoons.
During the wet season they intercommunicate and mingle with river water from the Paraguay, carrying the necessary elements to the revival of the local ecosystems.
