Negril is on the western most tip of the island of Jamaica and was only 'discovered' in the late 1950s when a highway was built connecting it to the nearby town of Green Island which opened it up to visitors from Montego Bay. It is probably the furthermost distance from Kingston of any town in Jamaica and has developed its own identity primarily around tourism thereby shunning the political mayhem oftentimes associated with Jamaica. It has been called the Reggae capital of the world and with good reason there is practically a live reggae show every night of the week preceeded by nature's own lightshow glorious sunsets. The emphasis in Negril is certainly on the environment. The completion of a US$30M sewerage system has already made a difference in the water quality of Long Bay.
