ABOUT FREMANTLE Fremantle is set on the beautiful Indian Ocean. Fremantle was declared a city in 1829. The city was named after Sir Charles Howe Fremantle who, as the captain of the "HMS Challenger", took possession of the West Coast of Australia as British territory. Settlers soon followed in the "Parmelia" and established the Swan River Colony. Aboriginals occupied this land for thousands of years before it was taken over by settlers.
