Amazing Experience on the North Shore
My girlfriend and I recently stayed with Cab for a few days and it was phenomenal.
Let's start with transportation. Cab came down to the airport to pick us up in his pimp car and gave us a great tour as we made our way out to Hale'iwa. There were a ton of sights we might not have appreciated otherwise, like all the different trees and mountains and crops. It was for a fee, but far less than it would've cost for a taxi and a lot quicker and easier than trying to take The Bus.
Cab gave us great recommendations on places to see, beaches to go to, and restaurants to dine at. He let us use his bikes to get around and even fixed them up so they fit us best. He offered to let us use his car to get around too, but it was just too beautiful to go driving.
There were a couple of rooms to choose from and we opted for the downstairs one which was a little bigger and could better accomadate 2 people. Even though we were very close to the compost heap, there were no funky smells. There's a regular bathroom and shower upstairs in the house (we were never adventurous enough to try the outdoors shower and even Cab usually stays away from the compostable toilet outside).
The whole place was very low-key, much like Cab. He made one of the best breakfasts we'd ever had. In that one meal, we seriously had 11 fruits, most of which I'd never heard of before. It's hard to overstate how amazing his garden is. He just has all these tropical fruits and veggies and herbs dropping into his house.
He's really tied into the nature scene and loves to teach abou it. He also gave us a bottle of champagne one night when we were going out for dinner. Oh and he took us to a locals yoga class in the morning which was a great way to start the day in the relaxed Hale'iwa.
We split our week in Oahu between Cab's place and the Hilton in Waikiki and I'm really glad we did that because
a) it made us appreciate having air conditioning b) it was a great counterpoint to all the consumerism that's thrown in your face on Waikiki c) the food was cheaper, healthier, more natural, and more authentic and d) it's so much easier to find a nice secluded beautiful picturesque relaxing spot on the north shore than anywhere else
So if you're looking for a taste of real Hawai'i and have a little bit of outdoorsiness and adventure in you, Cab's place is definitely for you

A truly unique experience
Super friendly Cab Spates, a former surf pro, has a couple of rooms in his house on offer. Don’t expect five star luxury – the rooms are basic and you have to share the bathroom with other guests – but do expect a truly unique experience. Each morning Cab prepares an exotic breakfast full of spices and fruits out of his garden. Do ask for his superb pancakes with passion fruit-look-a-likes. Cab is a great source for information on the benefits of Hawaiian plants and trees. The leaves of the Hibiscus in his garden are great to wash your hair with. Cab is also more than willing to give you information on the best beaches, picnic spots and markets on the island. Another plus is the location of his B&B: a couple of minutes away from the centre of Haleiwa and close to the action of the Banzai Pipeline. A funky place full of good vibes.
