The Lodge Of Tepozteco

The Lodge was designed and built by architect Sergio Palleroni with an aim to celebrate the natural materials and traditions of the area.

The property has three bedrooms, one entertainment room, three bathrooms, and a very large living, dining and country kitchen that create a 27m x 7m social space for parties or gatherings. Traditional two-story construction of native stone, cement, and brick all finished in natural earthen plasters (baba de maguey and colored earth) on the exterior. Wood beams in all rooms complement the feeling as do the natural tile floors and naturally pigmented floors. The property was created to reinforce the traditional living traditions of a countryside hacienda in Tepoztlan. All the rooms of the home open onto the hacienda’s terraces and gardens and the rooftop overlook has a spectacular view of the mountains and the valley below. Each room was designed to have its own intimate, Zen-views and connection to the landscape. Though the neighborhood has several other estates, and homes the topographic situation and size of the lot, one of the largest in the whole area, give it the feeling of total privacy.


The Lodge sits on 3 large ancient terraces of a farm that was first registered in the 19th c. The property sits on two of three ancient terraces that have been dated by INAH to be pre-colombian (the property itself sits on the site of an ancient pre-colombian home). The property is bordered by two ravines which makes it more protected physically and visually. The Lodge has been maintained as a productive farm and has a large field where corn is planted which is ringed by a mature ciruela and mandarin orchards. The farm also has a variety of other productive trees including coffee, mandarines, and oranges, as well as many native flowering plants and trees. This is the largest piece of land in this upper part of Tepoztlan, an area which has a footpath access for hiking or horseback riding to the natural reserve to the Tepozteco which is adjacent to the property.

The property was built to take advantage of the natural resources of this spectacular piece of land by harvesting its own water needs (250,000 rainwater fed cistern-sufficient to supply the property year round) and heating its water with solar energy. This also led the designer to orient the home to keep it naturally cool in the summer and warm in winter.

The Lodge is on the picturesque Callejon de la Esperanza and has large private gates at the entrance.

Directions

To arrive, go up the Carratera Sa Juan and turn right on Calle de la Esperanza (just past the taxi stand). Then turn left on Callejon de la Esperanza just before the road begins to curve to the right. It's a small street. The entrance is on the right side down a little hill. Follow the drive all the way back to the property.
