Hostal Transilvania

Hostal Transilvania offers outstanding value and service and is considered one of the top choices in the Center of Baños.

While the accommodation offered is fairly simple, the added extras at rock-bottom prices certainly shouldn't be missed. Hostal Transilvania offers everything a good hostel should and more, including a great Middle Eastern restaurant providing a tasty alternative to local cuisine.

Open since March 2004, Israeli/Ecuadorian owners, Itai and Janeth, really know what backpackers want. The multi-lingual staff speak Spanish, English and Hebrew and are always on hand to assist.

The location is ideal, just minutes from the bus station and steps away from la Basilica (the main church) and Jack, the friendly hostel-dog will make you feel right at home.


There are 15 rooms in total, spread across four floors sleeping from one to five people. The rooms are clean and comfortable, with private bathrooms, 24-hour hot water and cable tv in each. The cost is $7 per person.

Sealing the deal is an inviting common area with the DVD library, Playstation 2, book exchange and pool table. There is also a garden, a free luggage-storage room, a safe for valuables and good views of Baños from the upper rooms’ shared balconies.

Hamakom Lihiot restaurant provides a wonderful selection of breakfasts included in the overnight price, as well as delicious international fare at lunch and dinner. Specialties include falafel, hummus, malauah and shakshuka.

Free internet access is also provided for guest use.

Directions

From the bus station: take the first right onto Calle Maldonado. After half a block, take a left onto Calle Espejo. Walk three blocks then turn right onto Calle 16 de Diciembre. You'll find Hostal Transilvania a few doors down on the left. It is a five-minute walk from the bus station and a block away from la Basilica.
