Awera Island Guesthouse

The guesthouse consists of one large locally designed and built Uma. It has 3 main guest bedrooms with guests sleeping 2 per room, each room will have fans and good quality mosquito nets. The Uma has a small kitchen and a basic western style bathroom. The front part of the Uma has an eating and lounge area. It also has a small veranda from where you can sit and watch the waves roll in.

Staff

The guesthouse has a chef to cook 3 good meals each day; food will include both western style and local dishes, a boat driver to take you any of the breaks nearby and a local surf guide who makes sure everything runs to plan and help serve up a few cold beers at the end of the day. All meals, tea and coffee are included in the price.


Food

We serve pancakes and cereals for breakfast and, curries and stir-fries in the evening. Lunch consists of fried noodles, toasted sandwiches and omelettes. There is also plenty of locally caught fish within the menu. It is our goal to cook the best possible dishes from the freshes ingredients available locally.

Bar

We have cold beer and soft drinks for sale at reasonable prices or if you prefer, bring a bottle of your favourite spirits.

Guests and surf

There will only be a maximum of 5 guests using the guesthouse at a time. This means that more of the time guests will be able to experience living on a quiet rmote tropical island.

Activities

Apart from surfing there is some excellent snorkelling and fishing around the island. We have a boat and a driver that can take you all around the island: this is included in the price.Although there is some equiptment at the house guests are encouraged to bring their own gear.

Communication

Our proximity to Tua Pajet, the capital of the Mentawais means you don't have to feel like you are completely cut off from the rest of the world. We have excellent phone reception so grab a local SIM card and credit and if you want call home and check up on the family; no problem.

Climate

The Mentawai Islands are located just one degree south of the equator, they experience a temperature of between 22 and 32 degrees Celsius every day of the year. The water temperature hovers around 28 degrees all year round.

The wet season occurs around October and November as the monsoons pass from the northern to the southern hemisphere. Even though this is the wettest time of year it can rain at anytime.

It is during the months between April and September though that the huge southern Indian ocean storms pump massive swells north, these swells pass through an area of calm seas which gives them the opportunity to straighten up and prepare to hit the reefs of the Mentawais.

Local winds in the Mentawais will generally swap between being calm and changing direction every few hours.

This makes this area very different to places such as Bali there are no massive trade winds and the water is warm all year.

Malaria

There have been reported cases of malaria in this region and we strongly recommend you consult your doctor for suitable medications, prescriptions and provisions appropriate for you and specific to this area.

All rooms have the best Mosquito nets possible and guests are urged to wear long sleeves and use repellent in the evenings. By following these precautions, not getting bitten and taking suitable malarial prophylactics the chances of getting malaria are greatly reduced.

Directions

There are several ferries that travel between Padang and TuaPejet, a small town near the guesthouse.

The Ambu Ambu ferry is available for departure to the islands every Tuesday night and returning every Wednesday night. It departs from Bungus harbour about 40 km south of Padang, it is accessible by taxi.

The Sumber Reseki departs every Friday night from Padang Harbour and returns on Saturday night.

All ferries travel overnight and take about 10 hrs.

Before departure please confirm your departure with our manager on +628116600814 and we will arrange a pick up from the ferry and a speedboat transfer to the Guesthouse.
