Malealea Lodge & Pony Trek Centre

Lesotho is a world without fences. Breathtaking scenery abounds and every season has unique attractions. Malealea Lodge is run by the owners, Mick & Di Jones, both born in Lesotho and credited with more local knowledge than anyone. Various Basotho Children's choirs and a Local Basotho Band, using their local home-made instruments, entertain the guests in the evenings around a campfire.

A Memorable Holiday at Malealea

Outings range from 1 hour to 6 days or longer tailor-made to your requirements.
The treks are usually about 7 hours each day. No riding experience is necessary.
The huts and horses are hired from the Basotho people in remote areas.
The huts are very basic and are equipped with a gas cooker, cooking & eating utensils, mattresses on the floor. On trek you experience 'THE REAL AFRICA'.
The trails traverse spectacular mountain passes and some of Lesotho's highest waterfalls exploring Bushman paintings and experiencing 'Basotho culture'.

Basotho Guides and a packhorse accompany the treks.

Directions

From Johannesburg you can try using the Clocolan - Peka Bridge Border post, as it is not very busy, but it does close at 16.00hrs.

BYPASS MASERU when entering the Maseru Borderpost. Drive about 1 km from the Maseru Boderpost, turn RIGHT onto the MAFETENG road.
This bypasses Maseru and brings you out to near the airport. Turn RIGHT. DO NOT TAKE THE ROMA or MORIJA TURNOFFS BUT continue STRAIGHT on the Southern road, until you get to the Mostekuoa turn off (60kms from the Maseru Border Post via the bypass ) turn onto the Malealea Road as directed below for ALL DIRECTIONS.

LAW: KEEP 2 RED TRIANGLES IN VEHICLE FOR LESOTHO
PLEASE NOTE: AT POLICE ROAD BLOCKS.
Please stop at the STOP sign and WAIT for the policeman to signal to you to drive forward to where he is standing!!!
The police are very friendly, if you follow these instructions and there is no problem at all!

Johannesburg - (500kms), Kroonstad, Ventersburg, Senekal, Marquard, Clocolan, Ladybrand, Maseru, Motsekuoa, Malealea.
OR Clocolan - enter Lesotho at Peka Bridge, Teyateyaneng, Maseru, Motsekuoa, Malealea.
Durban, - (700kms), Harrismith, Golden Gate, Clarens, Ficksburg, Ladybrand, Maseru,Motsekuoa, Malealea.
Cape Town - (1100kms), Colesburg, Smithfield, Rouxville, Zastron, Wepener, Mafeteng, Motsekuoa, Malealea.
Bloemfontein - (200kms), Dewetsdorp, Wepener, Mafeteng, Motsekuoa, Malealea.

NB. ALL DIRECTIONS: (52 kms south of Maseru via town or 60 kms via the by pass or 26 kms north of Mafeteng), at Motsekuoa, turn onto a tarred road. Drive for 10kms, fork right, drive for 15kms, turn left, drive one km, over the Gates of Paradise Pass and drive another 6kms to Malealea Lodge.
