Sailboat


Our dhow is Ashraf, built of camphor in Kizingitini, Lamu five years ago.
She is 9.5m long overall, with a beam of 2.5m and a draught of 1m.
She has been fitted out for cruising with a toilet and shower forward of the mast, a covered structure over the aft deck for shade and the solar panels, and lockers, seats and flooring amidships.  
She is fitted with four120w solar panels with batteries to run the VHF radio, a fridge, lights and a music system.
An outboard motor is fitted.
Safety equipment includes liferaft, dinghy, lifejackets, radio, fire extinguisher, fire blanket, life buoys and a bilge pump.
Ahsraf is fully licenced and carries comprehensive insurance.


Destinations


A Typical four day trip.

The tree house on Kwayuu - Sail a dhow around Kenya's coral islands - coastline: lamu island kenya sailing Spend a night in Lamu then leave for Kiwayuu at dawn. Sail to arrive at the treehouse late afternoon, perhaps visiting a dhow building village on the way. Spend another nigth at Mkokoni opposite Kiwayuu - snorkelling, swimming, exploring. Sail back towards Lamu stopping for the night at Manda Toto or Pate.

Typical Day


Set sail early and have a simple breakfast under way. Stop for snorkelling or a village visit, followed by a simple lunch and sail to the night's destination, watching sea and birdlife as we sail.

Age range, type of group


All ages. Needs a minimum of two guests to run.

Sleeping and meals


Berths on borad are on mattresses - and, if necessary, under mosquito nets and a canvass tarpaulin, which can also provide shade during the day.
The treehouse is available on Kiwayuu and tents are supplied if needed.
You eat around a table at the mast, or on the beach.
Cooking is on a charcoal stove on the foredeck,

Restrictions


Lifejackets are supplied but everybody should be able to swim 50 yards.
