Hotel El Sueno is a family owned and operated lodge in the centre of Santa Elena, a small village next to the Monteverde Cloud Forest Reserve.
A favorite for budget travellers and backpackers, the lodging is hosted by a family originally from the Monteverde area.
The eating/kitchen and reception areas are surrounded by the rooms, all with their outside private entrances.
Three new rooms have been recently built at the back of the property. Breakfast is served daily between 6 and 8 a.m. and is very reasonably priced.
Lunch and dinner are also available by request at good prices, and a homemade lunch will be made to go upon request, if you're spending the day in one of the nearby parks. Transportation service is also available to the parks as well as Arenal Volcano.
The friendly owner, Rafa Trejos and his family, are helpful hosts, and offer horseback tours from their nearby farm

Directions
How To Get There
Bus from Fortuna (8 a.m., one hour later than what you find in LP) to Tilaran. The price is ¢ 450. In Tilaran there leaves a bus at 12.30 to Sta Elena (same bus station), price is ¢ 425. The whole journey takes about one day. The road to Tilaran follows the border of the lake for most of the time. Between Tilaran and Sta Elena the bus passes through little villages. The road along the lake is in bad condition and not tarred for most of the stretch. Between Tilaran and Sta Elena it only get worse. This must be one of the most terrible roads I did in Costa Rica by bus.
It's also possible to go from Monteverde to Arenal (and vice versa) in 3 hours. It's a 1.5 hours by 4x4, then 30 minutes by boat on the lake Arenal, and finally 30 minutes by 4x4 to La Fortuna. It costs 25 $, and the views on the like are really nice.
