For those looking for a gentle introduction to the world of whitewater, a trip on the Upper New is perfect for all generations. Children and adults alike have a lot of fun navigating the river in a duckie (a cross between a canoe, a kayak and a raft) or enjoying the river from inside a small raft. Rapids are Class I - III (on a scale of I - VI) and suitable for beginners yet challenging. Very scenic with many opportunities for floating and swimming in the river.

Crank it up a notch and crave the adventure of the Lower New River for whitewater rafting excitement. It's big waves, challenging rapids, boulder fields and towering cliffs. The pool/drop nature of the New River also allows ample time for taking a dip on a hot summer day and watching the world float by as you drift down the river. Beware of the noise around the bend! Rapids are Class I - V. We have Great two-Day Overnight trips - double your Fun!

Gauley River National Recreation Area

The Gauley River is somewhat unpredictable in the spring and summer - and that can be a wonderful adventure. Whether in a duckie or in a raft, getting on this river is a real treat in the spring and summer. The first weekend after Labor Day, the Gauley River takes on a life of its own. People flock from around the world to take advantage of the 22-day Fall Gauley Drawdown. The Upper Gauley is intense and challenging while the Lower Gauley reeks of big waves and lots of fun. Rapids are Class I - V+.

Typical Day


Start Here!
Your day may begin in one of the deluxe log cabin rentals just down the road. Then arrive at Mountain River's 9000 sq foot log lodge where everything is under one convenient roof. Here you'll find the complimentary Continental Breakfast, check in and safety video. Shop the store for those last minute items and river clothing. We have the world's largest supply of Mountain River shirts!

After being outfitted with your helmet and life jacket, load up for the ride to the river (we're centrally located between the New and Gauley rivers). Once at the river, you load into the boats and head downstream. A delicious river-side deli lunch is served on full-day trips. Upper New trips feature grilled hot dogs. Continue on downstream after lunch until the take out is reached. The equipment and loaded and the bus returns to the base lodge.

Shower and change into dry clothes, enjoy complimentary fresh-made popcorn while reliving the day's events on video. Swap stories in the Rapid Pub over your favorite libation. Purchase your photo, video, DVD and souvenirs all in one location. Dine in the outdoor pavilion. Play ping-pong. Laugh, smile, share the day!

Age range, type of group


Minimum age is 5 on the Upper New River
Minimum age is 12-16 on the Lower New and Gauley rivers.
Maximum age is ? (If you can get in the boat, we'll take you down the river!)

All groups are welcome - families, couples, reunions, receptions, singles, kids, seniors, church! Many groups are entitled to special discounts.

Scenic floats are also available with or without rapids.

Sleeping and meals


Sleep under the stars or in the comfort of a deluxe log cabin vacation rental home complete with fireplace and private hot tub. A complete range of lodging options is available, including camping, hotels and motels, state park lodges and campgrounds. Let us make your arrangements!

All activities require active participation and it is recommended that you be in good health. Please check with your family physician or medical provider before rafting.

Youth of ages 5-17 SAVE 50% on full-day and two-day trips!
College students with student ID save 30% every day on full-day trips.
