Are you looking for an adventure of mystery, romance & intrique! How about floating through a galaxy world of glow-worms on subterranean lakes, experiencing the splendour and roar as you slide down underground water-falls or taking a cuddle through the love tunnel! Discover enchanting limestone formations in this Castle of the Underworld. This is an adventure that is fun, exciting, has some personal challenge along with a touch of environmental knowledge. Who knows, you may even meet one of the Taniwhas that Maori legend says live in the underworld, you will certainly find about them! Would you like to finish up with a relaxing hot shower and spa with a hot drink and a snack afterwards? Yes! Then this trip is for you. Our cave rafting ( we are actually on tubes and not rafts!) adventure is flexible and can provide as much or as little challenge as you are comfortable with as there are various ways to go through the cave system. Every trip is different depending on who is on them so they can suit all abilities and ages down to as young as 8 years. As your adventure is also based on the South Island’s West Coast there are no crowds and no time limits. Team Building, educational objectives or leadership skills can be included for groups.
The trip is in a wild, natural cave and has different floating sections on tubes across flat, slow moving water done in the dark to the light of a galaxy of glow-worms in the roof. Your adventure with us is one of intrigue, anticipation and even a touch of romance. In between the floating sections you can do things like slide down an underground waterfall, cuddle through the Love Tunnel or ride the" Wild West Big Wet & Greasy"! A 100 foot natural rock hydroslide. People are able to choose to do what they want, some do everything while others just do what they are comfortable with as everything is optional.

Typical Day

Everyone meets at our base in Greymouth at 8:15 am or 1:15pm. We will come and pick you up off any buses or trains if you are arriving that way. After meeting your guide and other adventurers we gear up into helmets, lights, wetsuits, socks, boots and a whole lot of other specialist outdioor gear to keep you safe and comfortable. In the winter there are gloves and polyprop clothing as well if you want it. Infact we provide you with everything you need except a swimsuit or an extra pair of underwear if you do not have a swimsuit.
We then pile into the "Galloping Gurkin", our green van, for a ten minute drive to the end of the road. Yes our cave is only 10 minutes from the town centre. From here we do a 30 minute walk through the rainforest to the cave entrance. You can then either abseil in (must be specified when booking & costs extra) or enter thru the walk-in entry.
After a safety briefing by your registered guide (and some Taniwha discussions!) we now go underground for about 2 hours in a wild natural cave. No handrails,stairs or lights (apart from on your helmet) so we are walking around rocks, climbing here & there, not more than 3 metres high, and in places floating on a tube down these underground passages in the dark so you can see all the glow-worms in the roof. There are also waterfalls to slide down, tube jumps to do and of course the 'Big Wet & Greasy' 100 foot Hydroslide that some people go down a few times. Everything is optional so you choose to do what you want as you go. If your guide feels you will manage it there is also the opportunity to do some selfguiding if you dare! There are also lots of other things you can do but we are going to keep them as a surprise! When you get out of the cave we go back to our base where there is a hot spa waiting for you along with a hot drink and a muffin plus a wine or beer, for those with hairs in their belly buttons! (that is, it is not for children!). You also get unlimited use of our email facilities after your trip.
After relaxing in the spa, take your time & stay as long as you want, you can pick up your cave rafting certificate and be on your way.

Age range, type of group

Anyone from 8 years and above can do this adventure but you will enjoy it better if you have average fitness. If you are not sure if this trip will suit you or not then contact me and I will let you know or suggest another trip that maybe more suitable. As a general rule if you could do a 3 hour walk (we do not do this but it indicates a fitness level) with a 5 minute break evey half hour without feeling shattered, then you will manage this adventure easily. It does suit family and mixed ability groups as you can choose which things you want to do as you go. Some people do everything and others just do what they are comfortable with.
