Description - Iona's Space Age Pad

Surrounding Area

In 1871, a usually mild-mannered cow kicked over a lantern in a barn owned by Patrick O'Leary. A fire erupted, and by the time it was extinguished the only buildings to survive were the Water Tower and adjacent pumping station. This was known as the Great Chicago Fire. Architects came from all over the world to rebuild Chicago. They introduced a grid pattern for downtown streets, and formed what is now known as The Loop or the business district. Downtown Chicago has the best of the city's offerings, including some of the finest shopping, dining and entertainment venues on the continent. Chicago also offers world class arts. Whether you are interested in museums, music, dance, or a vibrant night life, you will find it in downtown Chicago. Daniel Burnham, one of the afore mentioned architects, designed public parks along all of the Lake Michigan shoreline, making Chicago one of the greenest and most beautiful urban centers in the country. Burnham, Sullivan, and their colleagues, using the latest engineering concepts of the day, invented the worlds first skyscrapers, giving birth to the Chicago school of architecture. Since that time Chicago has been home to some of the worlds greatest architects including Ludwig Mies Van Der Rhoe, who changed the very face of the world with architectural masterpieces that defined the international style, and Bertrand Goldberg, who expressed his love for society through his inventive designs. Today the surviving Water Tower and pumping station buildings serve as the tourist information center, and the skyscrapers stand as monuments to the architectural visionaries who first saw them as real in their minds eye, and brought them into being through ingenuity and perseverence.

Vacation Rental Property

When it was completed in 1964, Marina City was hailed as an architectural wonder, a "city within a city" that offered its inhabitants the promise of space-age living. To this day it remains not only one of the most photographed buildings in the world, but also an icon of Chicago. The accommodation is a one bedroom apartment located on the 40th foor of the West Tower.

Sleeps & # of Bedrooms

The unusual futuristic design of the building is the inspiration for the mid-century modern decor. The living room is decorated in sophistocated sixties style and graced with furnishings by such designers as George Nelson, and James Risom. Along with the usual ammenities (TV/VCR, stereo) a wall of glass treats guests to a sweeping view of Chicago's skyline. A full balcony off the living room, and half balcony off the bedroom make for a delightful place to enjoy breakfast as well as take in a 180 degree view of the city. The bedroom is more traditional in its decor, utilizing an eclectic collection of antiques and furnishings to create the more romantic mood of a Titanic era steamship stateroom.

Amenities

The sofa in the living room unfolds into a small bed that can accommodate an additional person. The building has valet parking available at an additional fee, as well as a dry cleaner, laundry facilities, and a grocery store. Guests also have access to the open air observation deck on the roof--61 stories above the city streets--as well as popular restaurants and entertainment venues all housed within the complex.
