Activity/Tour

Hands-On Art making

You will not only have the chance to do your own sketching and photography, but are invited to study for up to four hours each day in batik, mask carving, offering making or watercolor with native Balinese working artists. While you are not required to participate in these classes, we at ARTIS feel they are the highlight of the trip. The Balinese instructors are warm and enthusiastic, speak English and work with students at all levels of proficiency.

This tour is a special opportunity for an insiders view into this fascinating and complex culture. The area we stay in, known as the Cultural Center, is home to many of Bali's most famous artists, carvers, dancers and musicians. Our activities are designed to give you the best possible access to a culture that is experiencing an artistic Golden Age.
The program includes:

The program will have a flexible schedule to host 14 days and three week classes in batik, watercolor and wood or mask carving. There will be several orientation and language sessions. Participants may switch classes the second week.
- Work with Balinese artists in the renowned art villages of Ubud and Mas.
- Four performances of traditional dance.
- Extensive touring of east and south Bali, visit puppet makers.
- Visit to Jimbaran Beach where we will spend the night.

Typical Day

Youll enjoy this trip most if youre flexible and open to new experiences, if you have a good sense of humor, and if you can accept delays and last-minute changes with equanimity. If you require complete comfort and a firm itinerary at all times, this trip is not for you. The Balinese do not always run by the clock. Schedules sometimes have a way of shifting and provide an opportunity to do something special we had not planned, such as attend a temple festival or rite of passage ceremony. There is a very slight possibility that flight schedules might change. You may attend whichever tour activities you wish, however, there will be no refunds for missed tour activities. Anyone who leaves the tour for any reason is on their own. Visits to the studios and homes of artists and crafts people enable participants to observe and photograph the creative process, as well as purchasing art directly from the creator, usually at considerable savings.
