Surrounding Area
Bordered by Neah-Kah-Nie Mountain (1600 feet), a headland that juts into the Pacific Ocean, Manzanita Beach is 7 miles of hard-packed sand--attractive to beachcombers, surfers, wind surfers, kite flyers, beach cyclists, horseback riders, and walkers. The south end of the beach borders a state park with a small-craft airport and bicycle and horse paths. You can stand on the jetty at the mouth of Nehalem Bay, a favorite spot for fishing and crabbing. Along the banks of the bay you may see a pod of seals basking in the sand when they are not competing with the fishermen for the salmon and steelhead. Kayakers enjoy the bay and go up the north and south forks of the Nehalem River where they commonly sight bald eagles, beaver, river otter, blue heron, and jumping salmon. Trails take hikers up Neah-Kah-Nie Mountain for 30-mile-long vistas down the coast. The coast trail takes the hardy hikers down the other side and into Oswald West State Park where old growth forest is preserved and where surfers hang out year round to catch the waves on Short Sands Beach. Antique, gift, and book shops entertain the shoppers. Coffee shops and great restaurants attract tourists from Cannon
Beach (14 MI north) and Seaside (25 MI north).
